Synopsis
This book is intended for student nurses of all branches and junior staff nurses, particularly those beginning to work in the community for the first time. The book consists of a collection of contributions from a large variety of staff working in community settings and focuses primarily on the roles that nurses undertake but also includes the key allied health, medical, teaching and management perspectives. In discuss-ing each job role, the contributors focus on the following ele- ments: the role; pleasures, challenges and future directions; patient care; and student nurses on placement. There is no theory practice gap within the contents of this book as it is written by real people living and working in the real world. It is a book about experiences of what it is like to work as a community nurse, of being a student on a community placement and, most important of all, what it is like to be a patient in the community. The contributors of this book have really captured the realities of not only working in the community, but of being a student on placement and central to all is the first chapter by Nancy Telford which gives you a insight into the realities of a being patient who lives day after day with a devastating illness. John Fowler is Principal Lecturer at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, De Montfort University, Leicester and series editor of the Fundamental Aspects of Nursing series
