This book is designed to provide core theory and case examples predominantly around clinical and educational leadership for doctors, nurses and other health professionals. It includes other aspects of leadership in health professions, including leading research initiatives and leadership of professional groups and specialities. It takes an international perspective, drawing on contemporary best practice in health professions' leadership.

This book brings together the generic aspects of leadership (and strategic management) theory relating to clinical and educational contexts, whilst setting these within frameworks and case studies relating to a range of professional groups.

Scope and contents

This book would be a useful adjunct to more theoretical recommended texts for postgraduate certificates in clinical teaching, health professions education or in academic practice for clinical teachers. It might also be recommended for medical students and junior doctors to address the GMC requirements that doctors are trained to teach'. Also for educational supervisors in NHS Trusts as these have to be accredited in 2010 in order to meet General Medical Council/Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board training and education standards.

About the Editors

Judy McKimm is an experienced medical and healthcare professions' educator who has worked internationally in faculty and leadership development, accreditation and licensing and organisational development. She was Director of Undergraduate Medicine at Imperial College London until 2004, was a Senior Adviser (Professional Development and Standards) at the Higher Education Academy and Associate Dean at Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Postgraduate Medical School. Judy's current role is Director of Strategic Educational Development and Professor of Medical Education in the College of Medicine, Swansea University. She is Visiting Professor at the University of Bedfordshire and is a faculty member on the Association for the Study of Medical Education Developing Leaders' programme.

Helen O'Sullivan is Senior Lecturer in Medical Education, Director of the Centre of Excellence in Evidence Based Learning and Teaching (CEEBLT), Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, and Director of Post Graduate Research for Medical Education, Institute of Psychology, Health and Society University, of Liverpool, Liverpool.
